Pilot Mountain Arms 2-Day Long Range Precision Rifle Course

Location: Rose Hill, NC

Due to numerous requests - we now offer a 2-day Long Range Rifle Course. The course is run concurrently with our 1-day class.

Course Description:

This 2-day course is designed for the novice marksman, but is highly encouraged and recommended for those who have had little or no formal long range training. A fast paced course, it will begin with firearms safety and rapidly transition into equipment set up, fundamentals of marksmanship, basic ballistics, the use of ballistic computers/ phone apps and target engagements to 1320 yards. The range has 40 targets that are a combination of static and reactive/self-resetting steel targets that range from 100 to 1320 yards. The following topics will be taught in the course:

  • Safety
  • Equipment setup
  • Prone shooting position, recoil management
  • Confirm/check zeros
  • Chronograph ammo
  • Understanding MOA and milliradian adjustments
  • Use of the Kestrel Weather meter with ballistic solver or ballistics phone app.
  • True ballistic computer/App
  • Wind formulas
  • Spotting / calling winds
  • Data gathering out to 1100 yards
  • Engagement of targets to 1300 yards
  • Use of the reticle/hold offs
  • Positional shooting
  • Multiple target engagements
  • Stage planning/break down
  • Practical accuracy considerations (PRS/F-Class/Long Range Hunting)

Ammo Requirements: 220 rounds (minimum) of precision/match grade ammunition.

Training Schedule: Instruction starts at 8am and ends at 5pm (dusk in winter).

Individual equipment:

  • 308 or similar caliber precision rifle capable of one minute of angle accuracy. An accurate hunting rifle is fine if the shooter can manage the recoil for 100 rds. Hunting/sporter profile barrels tend to have a point of impact shift as they heat up and usually have to be shot at a slower pace which will significantly reduce the training value.
  • Match ammunition (minimum 220 rounds)
  • Quality scope with adjustable turrets and MIL or MOA reticle (manual for the scope if you have it)
  • Rifle anti-cant device (level) - recommended
  • Bipod
  • Rear rest (sand bag, bunny ear bag, etc)
  • Cleaning kit, Pen, pencil
  • Calculator
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Comfortable yet durable clothing (pants, long sleeved shirt, boots and hat recommended)
  • Rain/inclement weather gear
  • Food/Lunch to snack on throughout the day
  • Spotting scope (recommended –not required. We will have several extra.)
  • Shooting Mat (recommended)
  • Sunscreen/bug repellent (seasonal)
